Well, I guess we all need to have one of these now. And by “we” I mean humans who create in any form. Right up-front I should admit that I have never had a manifesto before. So, you’ll have to forgive me if mine doesn’t align with the other manifestos you may have perused in the past.
If you’ve read any of my work, you may have guessed that I am pro-AI. If so, you are not exactly right. I am neither for or against AI. It exists and therefore, I feel the need to understand its power – especially as a “creative”.
The following are my wills and won’ts for AI:
I will use AI for anything that doesn’t feel precious to me or like unearned gains in my creative results.
I will use AI to advance my writing skill by soliciting feedback on a draft from the perspective of an editor of XYZ magazine or ABC publication on structure or voice or clarity. AI as a snotty high-brow editor is a fantastic learning tool.
I will take text generated by AI and work with it as a starting point, for business, SEO, and technical writing. These are not precious to me.
I will use AI to write code for my own trivial pursuits – loudly, proudly, badly. I have learned a lot vibe-coding.
I will use AI to generate images, music, sound, and video for pet (aka unpaid) projects and prototypes.
I will use AI as a thought partner when I need a devil’s advocate against my logic or ideas, or a hype-man.
I will NOT use AI to select a single word of my own creative writing works – no matter how much better or faster it may be able to produce something. THIS is precious to me.
I will NOT use AI to generate digital deliverables instead of working with an artist/musician/coder/etc. in projects that include potential profit. (If the paid artisan wants to use it for speed or enhancements – cool.)
I will NOT outsource my thinking to AI. THIS is also precious to me. I am not asking it to tell me what to think.
And just like that – Presto! New manifesto.
That’s all I have as of March 2026. This manifesto is subject to change as rapidly as the technology.
